How to Choose the Right Gutters

There’s a long list of things that go into constructing (or maintaining) a home, including choosing the right type of rain gutters to install. Although this may not be as exciting as some of the other choices, rain gutters are an essential part of your home that protects it from harmful water damage. Depending on your situation, choosing a certain type of rain gutters can be better for your wallet, aesthetic, maintenance requirements, and/or storm protection. Consider the following things when deciding which gutters are right for your home.

Decide on a Material

Rain gutters come in a variety of materials, each with their own pros and cons. The most common option is aluminum gutters, which are lightweight, easy to install, resistant to rust, and come in a wide variety of colors to match your home’s trim. Aluminum gutters are also the most cost-effective option.

However, there are other options available. Steel and zinc generally last longer than aluminum gutters, but are also more expensive. Copper is praised as an attractive, durable, and upscale choice, which doesn’t need refinished, but represents the highest price.

Lastly, vinyl gutters are also an option. This material is highly affordable but is also the least durable and prone to leaks at the seams.

Decide on a Style

Many rain gutters come in pre-constructed lengths that are joined together in seams. Unfortunately, these seams are often where leaks or other issues first arise. Thus, shorter lengths of gutter may require more maintenance and repairs in the future as a result of having more seams.

Even better, seamless gutters represent an additional financial investment but are custom-made to fit your home. They are much more resistant to leaks and cracks over time.

Consider Gutter Guards

Once you’ve decided on the gutters you’re putting in your home, you may also want to consider adding gutter guards to your rain gutter system in order to reduce cleaning and maintenance requirements. Gutter guards, also known as leaf guards or gutter covers, are installed over the top of your rain gutters as a mesh-like cover to keep leaves, sticks, and other debris out of your gutters. But they still allow rainwater and runoff to flow smoothly. Gutter cleaning can be an annoying chore, and gutter guards remove the hassle associated with climbing a ladder and cleaning.
